PORTSMOUTH -- A man police say they shot after stabbing a Portsmouth couple is out of the hospital and charged with attempted capital murder.

James Artis Jr.., 49, is in the city jail.

The stabbing happened around 9:45 a.m. on March 17th in the 4300 block of Twin Pines Rd. in Portsmouth.

Donald Hill said his aunt and uncle, Sherman and Joan Mason, were attack by Artis, who is a neighbor. Hill said Artis wanted money.

'He came in and just kept on stabbing them,' Hill recounted.

Hill also said he'd asked them for money before and they'd given it to him.

According to police, the Masons were in their home and Artis had a knife. Mrs. Mason was able to get away and hide in the attic until police arrived.

Police confronted Artis Jr. inside the home and had to open fire.

Investigators say they recovered a knife believed to have been the weapon used in the attack.

Meantime, the officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure.

Artis, who was taken to the hospital for treatment, was charged with attempted capital murder and more charges are pending, police said.

The investigation forced police to closed two blocks of Twin Pines Road between Field Road and Barberry Lane.
