HAMPTON ROADS The Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is prepared for the winter storm forecasted to impact the area through Monday morning.

According to weather forecasts, snow and freezing rain tonight will continue through early tomorrow. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to create the potential for slick conditions on area roadways overnight Sunday, March 24, and during the early morning hours, Monday, March 25, especially on bridges, overpasses and ramps. Drivers are encouraged to monitor weather conditions throughout this storm and be prepared to alter their travel plans, if necessary.

Currently, VDOT and contractor crews are applying a sand and salt abrasive mixture to moist pavement as needed, focusing on areas that typically freeze first bridges, overpasses and ramps. The sand provides traction and salt helps to melt ice. However, drivers must reduce their speed in icy conditions, even when roads have been treated. While only minor accumulation is expected in Hampton Roads, motorists should still use extreme caution and be alert for icy areas.

Drivers are encouraged to check VDOT's 511 travel website,, before traveling. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. Once on the road, VDOT's 511 mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms. Travelers can also call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for real-time information on traffic and road conditions.
