NEWPORT NEWS-Police say a baby girl is lucky to be alive after being left in a car on a hot night.

The one-year-old was in her car seat in the back of a Honda Civic parked in front of Party City on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

When first responders arrived at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, the outside temperature was 88 degrees. The child was sweating and was calm, police stated.

Her mother, 23-year-old Angela Stone of Hampton, returned to the car 25 minutes after that. She said she forgot her child was in the car and she didn't mean to forget, said police spokesman Lou Thurston.

The child was taken to the hospital for treatment and released. She is now with her grandparents.

Stone has been charged with felony child neglect.
