RICHMOND (AP) -- Virginia's oyster harvest has reached the highest level since 1987.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Monday that the 2012-13 harvest of the hard shell totaled 406,000 bushels, up 60 percent over the previous year. The harvest numbers include wild oysters and those grown in aquaculture farms.

Of the total harvest, 149,000 bushels were harvested from public oyster grounds and 257,000 from privately leased grounds.

McDonnell credits his administration's efforts to restore oysters to the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. He cited $2 million for oyster restoration in the state's current budget.

Earlier this year, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley also touted a record year for oysters in his state.
