RICHMOND-- Virginia's governor is also extending his sympathies to Connecticut following the horrific elementary school massacre, saying the state still has 'painful memories' from the April 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.

In a statement, Gov. Bob McDonnell said Friday his thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by the deadly shootings of children and adults in Newtown, Conn.

He said the memories of the Tech shootings have never faded in Virginia and the state continues to grieve for the 32 slain by a lone gunman on the Blacksburg campus.

The gunman killed himself at Tech, leaving 33 dead in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

McDonnell also offered any assistance Virginia can offer to Connecticut.

Govenor Bob McDonnell:

'It is with a heavy heart and the deepest of sympathies that I learned earlier today of the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those impacted by the events transpiring today, and to the teachers, emergency responders, and all others touched by this tragedy. Unfortunately, Virginia has our own painful memories of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007. Those memories will never fade, and we continue to grieve for all those lost on that April day. We are all too aware of the impact that events like this can have on a community. If there is anything Virginia can do to assist Governor Malloy and the citizens of Connecticut, we stand ready to do so.'

Congressman Bobby Scott:

'Our schools, and especially our elementary schools, are meant to be sanctuaries of peace and safety. Words alone cannot describe the anguish of this shocking tragedy that the community of Newtown, Connecticut and our entire nation are feeling at this moment. My thoughts and prayers are with all the students, parents, and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary.'

'In the near future, we need to review all the recent mass shootings to ascertain what can be done to prevent these types of senseless tragedies from happening.'
