CHESAPEAKE -- Police can't close the books on four deaths in Chesapeake and Newport News because no one knows who they are.

In hopes of identifying them, the Va. Chief Medical Examiner Thursday released facial reconstructions of each man.

There are two cases in Chesapeake. On Nov. 19, 1983, a man's skeletal remains were found in the woods at the end of Happy Acres Road. Investigators say the man was white and between 23-30 years old.

The second case in Chesapeake dates from July 20, 1982. Police found mostly skeletal, partly decayed remains in a ditch off Airport Feeder Road by Rt. 58. The medical examiner says the man was white, 35-55 years old and around 5'5' tall.

Authorities hope the models will help identify two men found dead in Newport News. On January 29, 1982, bones were found in the water at a boat harbor on the Chesapeake Bay. Authorities say the man was white, 35-50 years old and between 5-5' and 5'10' tall.

Then, on April 07, 1992, a man's remains were found next to a warehouse at 231 Enterprise Drive. Investigators say the man was likely to have been 35-50 years old.

'We hope that by presenting the facial approximations to the public someone will recognize one of these individuals as their long lost loved one,' said Chief Medical Examiner Leah Bush, MS, MD.

The images are now part of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons Systems (NamUs), a web-based computer search engine funded by the National Institute of Justice for matching missing and unidentified persons.

'NamUs is a valuable tool for us. It gives local law enforcement agencies such as the Newport News Police Department a way to search for missing and unidentified persons in ways that weren't available before, not just locally but nationwide,' said Lou Thurston, Newport News Police Department spokesman.

Right now in Virginia, the remains of more than 200 people are waiting to be identified. Some of the cases date back to the 1970s.

Anyone with information that could identify any of the men should call the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner at 757-683-8366.
