NORFOLK - Norfolk Police and Fire took no chances with a duffel bag left on the side of the street in Wednesday morning.

Someone called police after spotting the bag in a neighborhood near Reservoir Ave. and Bond St. around 6:30 a.m.

Police blocked access in a one-block radius of the site and called in the bomb squad. A robot was deployed to give authorities a closer look and then it took an x-ray of the bag.

After reviewing it, authorities decided to blow it up. They determined the contents could have been school items - papers and books.

The scene was cleared around 9:30 a.m. and streets were reopened.

During the investigation, Norfolk Public Schools advised principals that the situation may have delayed some students getting to class. At nearby Norfolk State University, Phyllis Wheatley Residential Hall was evacuated as a precaution.

No one was hurt.
