VIRGINIA BEACH-- The Nofolk FBI office confirms that two agents were killed Friday during a training exercise off the Virginia Beach coast.

FBI spokeswomanVanessa Torres says the accident occured sometime Friday afternoon and that the matter is under investigation.

Both of the agents were part of the FBIhostage resuce team team based in Quantico.

Special Agent Christopher Lorek and Special Agent Stephen Shaw were members of the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team, part of the Critical Incident Response Group based at Quantico, Virginia. The cause of the incident is under review.

In a statement, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller said, 'We mourn the loss of two brave and courageous men, who like all who serve on the Hostage Rescue Team whether training or on an operational mission accept the highest risk, each and every day, in their commitment to keep our nation safe. Our hearts are with their wives, children, and other loved ones who feel their loss most deeply. And they will always be part of the FBI Family.'

Special Agent Lorek, age 41, joined the FBI in 1996. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 11 and 8. Special Agent Shaw, 40, joined the FBI in 2005 and is survived by his wife; a daughter, age 3; and a son, age 1.

A spokesperson for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital tells 13News that the two agents were flown to the hospital sometime Friday. It remains unclear when the agents were brought in, or if the hospital had been alerted prior to their arrival.

The Norfolk Medical Examiner's office has not released a cause of death for the two agents, and further information will likely be unavailable until Monday morning.

The Hostage Rescue team is the federal law enforcement's lead counterterrorism tactical team.Being in peak physical condition is critical, but candidates must also perform well on firearms tests and during complex arrest scenarios.

'The process is designed to identify individuals who will perform the best in a crisis situation,' said FBI Deputy Director Sean Joyce, a former HRT operator.
