PORTSMOUTH - It's a smelly mess in a busy Portsmouth neighborhood.

A truck from Atlantic Plumbing spilled its load of sewage at the intersection of Frederick and Airline boulevards late Monday morning, fire officials said.

Police say the spill covered about a mile in the area of Airline and Frederick blvds.

People weighed in on the WVEC13 Facebook page. Alyson Mitchell wrote 'It smells utterly disgusting!! Do not drive through it!!'

Ancora Imparo stated, 'My car has raw sewage ALL OVER IT as a result of it directly spilling on my vehicle.'

Cheryl Clark says the same thing happened to her.

'I drove through it not knowing what it was at first & now my van smells horrible.'

The Health Department says anyone who drove through the sewage should wear protective clothing and something over their nose and mouth when washing the vehicle. They suggest wearing boots and clothes that can be washed and disinfected.

Atlantic Plumbing arranged for street sweepers to clean up the spilled sewage and then clean the street.

Officials tell us they don't want material going into storm drain system.
