NORFOLK---There may be two speed bumps in the way of a light rail extension to the Naval Station.

A week before Hampton Roads Transit will host a meeting on the extension, people living in West Ghent in Norfolk are expressing concerns over the project.

They are concerned because the route will likely pass through their neighborhood.

'My hope is that it will be nipped in the bud,' said West Ghent resident Carter Bernert. 'I don't want it to be something where a decision is already made without consultation.'

Flooding on Hampton Boulevard and the surrounding neighborhoods also concerns transportation engineers.

'I think all stakeholders need to be aware of these potential problems,' said Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization Engineer Sam Bellfield.

HRT will be hosting three meetings where residents can weigh in on the extension:

  • Tuesday, September 10, at the Holiday Inn on Greenwich Road in Norfolk
  • Wednesday, September 11, at Norview High School in Norfolk
  • Thursday, September 12, at Ted Constant Convocation Center
  • All meetings are from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
