CHESAPEAKE--FEMA has awarded the city of Chesapeake a $1.3 million flood mitigation grant, which will be used to acquire and demolish five homes and elevate another.

The acquired properties are on Mann Drive, Belmont Street and Mullen Road. The raised home is on Fernwood Farms Road.

'Since 2005 the city has received more than $6 million in this flood mitigation money. We have used it to acquire some 25 structures,' said the city's Deputy Coordinator of Emergency Services Robb Braidwood.

Properties acquired by the city will be purchased at fair market value and turned into permanent open space.
