SURRY CO -- More than a dozen people are looking for a place to live after fire damaged an apartment building in Surry County Thursday morning.

Five fire departments responded to the blaze near Spring Grove around 9 a.m.

Surry County Sheriff Alvin Clayton told 13News Now the fire started in a first-floor unit in building 46.

'Flames, I mean flames. It was terrible flames. It started from the bottom and rushed its way up to the top,' eyewitness Pettra Ellis told 13News Now.

Diane Womble saw the fire and said she was praying the families made it out safely.

'It's pretty sad. My heart goes out to them,' Womble said.

Everyone in the building was able to get out safely. Nobody was injured, Clayton said.
