NEWPORT NEWS-- Fire units were on the scene of an apartment fire Thursday night in the Auburn Chase Apartment Complex.

Firefighters were called to the report of a structure fire in the 400 Block of Turlington Road around 7:27 p.m.

When they arrived they found smoke and fire coming from the front of the two-story apartment building.

Three occupants of the apartment were able to escape, however two occupants had to be transported by ambulance to Riverside Regional Hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

The preliminary damage estimate is $40,000.00 with the cause of the fire being attributed to a cooking.

Four apartments were condemned and at least three people are displaced.
