VIRGINIA BEACH - Health and PE classes are just one way schools work to keep students fit. Now, there's an app for that - actually several apps - and they're being used to help students at a Va. Beach school.
Lynnhaven Middle School's PE Department has designed a program using the appsMapMyRun and i-nigma, a QR Code Scanner, and Fooducate.
While making their way through a quarter-mile path, students use their iPods/iPads to scan QR codes that are placed along the athletic fields. They get instructions and/or videos ondifferent activities they should try.
MapMyRun helps them track how far they go and how long it takes them to complete the challenge.
School officials say students can use that information to track their fitness and watch their califories.
'By including the codes in our fitness program, we hope children will not only enjoy P.E. class more, but encourage them to become active participants in their personal health outside of school,' said PE teacher Mark Kinzel.
