SUFFOLK -- A two-alarm fire forced 11 people from their homes in downtown Suffolk early Wednesday.

Crews arrived on Holladay Street just before 5:00 a.m. and found a duplex on fire. They say someone living on the second floor woke up when the smoke alarm sounded and calls for help were made.

Two duplexes were damaged by fire; the two duplexes next to it were evacuated as a precaution, said City spokeswoman Diana Klink..

Firefighters say they had the fire under control within an hour. Now they're working to determine what sparked it.

The residents are being helped by the Red Cross.
