NORFOLK-- A grenade found Monday on Merritt Street has been determined not to be dangerous.

Police got a call around 7:30 p.m. from a woman who had found the grenade earlier in the day and had brought it to her home in the 7900 block of Merritt. The woman had begun to be apprehensive about the grenade and that's why she called police.

Police arrived and they put the grenade outside on top of a trash can. Some houses in the neighborhood were evacuated.

A Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called and they determined the device was a practice grenade and never a danger to anyone. They removed it from the scene to dispose of it.

There were no injuries.
