CHESAPEAKE Nearly a year after a Navy Jet crashed into the Mayfair Mews apartments in Va. Beach, a hero is being honored.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Beane received the Meritorious Service Awared on Tuesday.

When the FA-18 jet crashed, Beane was off duty at lunch. He ran to help get people out of the burning buildings. That's when he and another Good Samaritan found a downed pilot, cut him free from his parachute and pulled him more than 300 feet to safety.

'We are extremely proud of Petty Officer Beane,' said Coast Guard Capt. Gene Gray, Deployable Operations Group commander. 'He is one of our many top performers in the deployable specialized forces, and his actions are a credit to the capability and adaptability our members. '

Beane received the medal during a ceremony at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads Northwest Annex in Chesapeake.

The medal is the non-combat counterpart to the Bronze Star.
