SMITHFIELD - There was extra security Friday at Smithfield High School after rumors circulated that there could be violence.

Initially, authorities believed there had been an altercation between a student and a teacher earlier this week; however, Friday morning, the sheriff's office clarified that there was no incident.

Instead, investigators determined the rumor of a student making threats against a teacher was spread on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, said Isle of Wight Co. Sheriff's spokeswoman Kristin Wilda.

Even a post on the WVEC-TV 13Facebook page showed concern about the rumor and safety at the school.

To be safe, the Sheriff's Office and the Smithfield Police Department were on hand to oversee students' arrival and officers will be in place all day, said schools spokeswoman Kenita Bowers.
