YORK COUNTY--The owner of a dog injured trying to attack a burglar is thanking 13News Now viewers for their help paying for his surgery.
Carol Baugham of York County says she was asleep when an intruder entered her bedroom and shined a flashlight in her face earlier this month.
Baugham's dog, Gizmo, jumped out of the bed and chased the would-be burglar away, but in the process he injured himself.
The next morning the four-year-old Shih Tzu couldn't walk.
'The vet says he nearly severed his spine,' said Baugham. 'He saved my life and I had to save his.'
Gizmo went through four hours of surgery September 5, but the surgeon said they won't know for a couple of months if the dog will recover.
Baugham called 13News Now Friday to say donations from our viewers paid the $3,000 vet bill.
'Gizmo still can't walk, but he's doing much better,' she said.
Baugham also is grateful for the stroller that someone gave her. She says she uses it to help him.
Baugham's friend Denise Dalmus Ambrose posted on the WVEC13Facebook page that donations are no longer being accepted and any money that comes in now is being returned.
Baugham is one of several victims in a recent string of home burglaries in the lower part of the York County.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Department has arrested one suspect and charges are pending against three more people.
