NEWPORT NEWS-Newport News Police want to help you avoid being a victim of auto theft.

Auto theft is up 10-15% this year across Hampton Roads, according to spokesman Lt. Sherman T Edwards.

So, on Saturday, September 21, detectives will secure VIN numbers on visible places like windshields. When criminals see the Vehicle Identification Numbers displayed on windshields, it discourages them police say.

They also provide police better access to trace a car's owner if it was recovered after being stolen.

'We hope people come by Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.,' said Edwards.

Va. State Police will also be on hand presenting their HEAT program. HEAT stands for help eliminate auto theft.

The event is free. It's at Police Headquarters, 9710 Jefferson Avenue. If you can't make it at that time, there will be another event on October 26 at Newport News City Park.
