HAMPTON - It's the first day for millions of uninsured Americans to shop for coverage under the Affordable Care Act and Virginia's health insurance marketplace is open for business.

Southeastern Virginia Health Systems is one of the certified application consultants currently enrolling people.

The first of two Health care 'Enroll fests' is Tuesday until 2:00 p.m. at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, 5 Armistead Pointe Pkwy in Hampton. The second is from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Website for people to shop for coverage is not always responding - a sign of the system being overloaded.

Many people at the event Tuesday said they were looking for information and weren't necessarily ready buy a plan.

Darius Jones says that his plan offered through his work it's too expensive so he turned it down. He says he barely makes enough on the income from his job. He hopes to find a truly affordable plan and expects to apply for a subsidy toward his monthly premium.

Sylvia Whitaker, a certified application consultant, gave out a check list to people so they knew what they'd need to enroll. Find out more about that on the 13News Now Health Care Bottom Line page.

The event include updates on Medicaid/Medicare, free health screenings, enrollment in the marketplace exchange and a job/education fair.
