NORFOLK -- Have you ever had to rely on medical transport services for your child during a medical emergency? The specialized Neonatal/Pediatric Transport Team at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters provides service to all hospitals in southeastern Virginia, the Eastern Shore and northeastern North Carolina. The transport team uses specially designed mobile intensive care unit ambulances and aircraft for acute and non-acute pediatric emergencies and neonatal patients.

The team is uniquely qualified to meet emergency medical needs of children of all ages and sizes from premature infants to high school athletes.

Each Mobile unit is staffed by a three-person team: a registered nurse with at least two years of pediatric critical care experience in either the pediatric or neonatal intensive care unit, a registered respiratory therapist with at least one year of pediatric critical care experience. a paramedic with at least three years of experience in pre-hospital medical treatment, emergency procedures and emergency vehicle operations.

There are two dedicated teams available 24 hours a day to respond to request from referring physicians.

The team also allows for simultaneous request to be filled such as the response to twins being born prematurely.

Because the transport team often starts the treatments that would normally start once the child is in CHKD - either at the referring facility or during transport to CHKD - the child benefits. The same quality of equipment at the hospital also travels with the transport team.
