NEWPORT NEWS -- A swimming advisory has been issued for Hilton Park Beach in Newport News. The Peninsula Health District issued the warning after high levels of bacteria were found in the water in tests conducted on July 8.

Signs are posted that say 'Warning swimmers - bacteria levels do not meet state water quality standards, swimming not advised until further notice'.

Health officials will test the water again Thursday and could lift the ban if levels come back in the 'safe' range.

'We encourage the public to protect their health by complying with this advisory,' said Dr. Nzinga Teule-Hekima, Director of the Peninsula Health District. 'Typically, an advisory of this nature is temporary and will be withdrawn once the bacteria levels have returned to a safe level.'
