They ran off and shot at the car as it followed them.

The driver spotted a police officer and told him what happened. That officer broadcast the situation and the Speight and Jones were caught soon after, according to investigators.

Speight, 22, and Jones, 21, were charged with 2 counts of Robbery and Attempt Robbery, Use of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Jones also was charged with Attempt Malicious Assault.

With the holiday shopping season starting, experts say you need to take extra precautions.

'When you walk back and forth to the store, you need to be looking up. Don't be digging in your purse or checking what's on your phone,' warns Georjeane Blumling of AAA Tidewater Virginia. 'Make sure that you're aware of your surroundings and you're looking around.'

Blumling also recommends trying to park under street lights and not overloading yourself with packages. Maybe shop with a friend and be cautious if strangers approach you.

'I hate to say it, but this is not necessarily the time to be overly-friendly. If somebody is asking for directions, it's just like we tell our children, you need to be cautious of strangers in situations,' added Blumling.
