SUFFOLK -- Police say a two-year-old boy was found alone in the middle of the street in a Suffolk trailer park.
The child was in a diaper and T-shirt when a concerned citizen spotted him on Pughsville Road around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The responding officer located the boy and found his mother, 27-year-old Ashley Courtney Sherrill, in her trailer, according to City spokeswoman Diana Klink.
The toddler, Jackson, had been gone 10-15 minutes before he was located, authorities added.
The temperature outside was 99 degrees with the heat index of 106 at the time, Klink advised.
Sherrill, who has three kids, was charged with cruelty to children.Child Protective Services is investigating.
Sherill, who is a single mother, talked with 13News. She says he unlocked the door and went outside. She was home but didn't notice that he had gotten out.
'It's hard to believe how blown up this has gotten. I'm not a bad mom,' said Sherrill. 'I was shocked when I was arrested for endangering my child.'
Sherrill spent a day in jail.
She has now installed a different lock on her door and she hopes their incident will remind parents how quickly things can happen with little children.
'Don't let your children out of your sight,' concluded Sherrill.
