NORFOLK-Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we're told. Yet many students go to school hungry.

This year, 22 Norfolk schools are serving a free, brown bag morning meal that children can take into the classroom.

The goal is to give youngsters a good start on the day because studies show those who east breakfast have higher math and reading scores.

At Tarrallton Elementary School, where the program was tested last year, students said they were feeling more focused.

'It helps me because sometimes I can't concentrate because my stomach, because I'm a 5th grader and we don't eat lunch until 1pm,' said Jackson.

The Breakfast in the Classroom program at 21 Norfolk elementary schools and one middle school is paid for through School Nutrition and the USDA.
