NEWPORT NEWS -- A man was charged with assault and strangulation in connection with an altercation that took place Friday night.

The victim, a 30-year-old Carrollton woman, told police that she was at the home of Derek L. BaCote, in the 1200 block of Emma Drive, when the pair began arguing.

The woman says the argument turned physical and that BaCote struck her and choked her before she could leave the house. She returned home and contacted police about the incident around midnight on Friday.

Early Saturday morning, an emergency protective order and warrants were issued, but officers say they were unable to locate BaCote.

49-year-old BaCote surrendered at Newport News police headquarters on Saturday afternoon.

He was arrested and held without bond.
