CHESAPEAKE -- The sister of a young man killed at a party says he died trying to protect her.

A candlelight vigil, filled with tears and stories of better times, was held Monday night for18-year-old Deonta Cartwright.

He was at the house party on Butt Street in Chesapeake Saturday night when gunshots were fired outside the home. Latoya Gibbs says her brother checked on her to make sure nothing had happened inside.

'Iwas in the kitchen and Iwas going to see what was going on with him. He pushed me and my friend back in the kitchen,' she said.

Then, someone knocked at the door and Cartwright answered, she recalled, and that's when he was shot in the head.

Cartwright's mother, Clayte, is hoping for justice.

'That was my baby. My son is gone, and I don't even know who did this,' she said.

Anyone with information can call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or text CHESTIP with information to CRIMES (274637).

Cartwright's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
