PORTSMOUTH - The Navy's praising its first biodiesel-fueled steam plant.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy Tom Hicks toured the plant with heats 16 office buildings and 13 warehouses at St. Juliens Creek Annex in Portsmouth.

B20, a 20 percent biodiesel, 80 percent number 2 fuel oil blend, is popular in alternative fuel vehicles because it burns cleaner than traditional diesel.

Hicks says the blend won't increase heating costs at the Annex and will further the Navy Secretary's goal for greater energy security.

St. Juliens Creek Annex provides a radar testing range (35 acres or 141,640 m2) and various administrative and warehousing structures.
