NEWPORT NEWS-- An armed man robbed a Shell gas station in broad daylight.

Just before 1p.m. on Sunday afternoon, a man armed with a gun came into the Shell gas station in the 4900 block of Jefferson Avenue.

The man demanded money from the clerk behind the counter. Police say he fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Shortly after the man fled, a suspect was detained by Newport News police and is being questioned by a Robbery detective.

Police say that there were customers inside the store at the time of the robbery.There is no word on if anyone was hurt. tried to get in touch with the manager of the gas station, but he could not be reached for comment.
