VA BEACH - A dog found dead after being left outside at the Va. Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center had severe heart and lung disease, according to necropsy results released by Va. Beach Police.

10-year-old 'Batman,' a Pit bull, was found dead in an outdoor run area on February 18, nearly 24 hours after being let outside. Wayne Gilbert with Animal Control said temperatures overnight fell into the lower 20s.

The necropsy also showed 'Batman' had the potential for diabetes mellitus.

A police department news release stated the dog's medical problems likely 'strongly contributed to his death. It is inconclusive as to how much the hypothermia contributed to his death.'

The case remains under investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department, which is looking at the shelter's policies and procedures and whether they were followed by employees.

Officials note that the Animal Care and Adoption Center is not affiliated with the Va. Beach SCPA.
