HAMPTON -- Police are investigating a deadly Friday night shooting that happened in the first block of Phelps Circle.
Hampton Fire and Rescue and members of the police department responded to a call about shots being fired around 11:21 p.m. on Friday.
When police arrived they located an adult male lying in the roadway. According to a press release, the man was suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.
He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m.
Police have identified the victim as 40-year-old John Thomas Brown of Hampton.
Investigators have determined that the suspect, John Homer O'Neal IV, and the victim knew each other.
The pair were apparently arguing when O'Neal pulled out a gun and shot the victim.
35-year-old O'Neal has been arrested and charged with one count of murder and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
