HAMPTON -- Two people who were holding onto the mast of their sinking 23-foot sailboat were rescued in Hampton Friday.

Emergency crews and a USCG helicopter were on their way to the scene, off the 700 block of North First Street, when a civilian boat rescued the stranded boaters, officials said.

The two were several hundred yards from shore and were wearing personal flotation vests.

Officials said the rescued citizens were transferred to the Salts Ponds Marina and then Sentara Careplex Hospital for medical treatment.

No word on the extent of their injuries or what caused the boat to sink.
