UPDATE 1/23 3 p.m.: Around 200 customers in Hampton Roads and NE North Carolina remain without power Thursday afternoon. Crews have restored power to around 12,000 customers in the last 24 hours.

According to Dominion Power officials, if customers try to conserve electricity by unplugging appliances that aren't being used, it will speed up the restoration process and reduce the chance of re-occurring outages.

NORFOLK-The snow and ice is keeping Dominion Virginia Power crews busy.

Early Thursday, about more than 1,400 customers were in the dark, mostly due to weather, spokeswoman Bonita Billingsley Harris told

Half that number live in Moyock, NC, where 600 customers lost power around 12:30 a.m. Crews found a wire down on the Pudding Ridge Road. Most have power back and those who don't should have power by noon, Harris noted.

Around 5:15 a.m., an outage started at 5:17, affecting 617 customers in the Hickory area. Dominion Power crews were working to make repairs.

In Virginia Beach, a bad underground cable was responsible for an outage on Harpers Rd. in the Derby Run area.

In Suffolk at 5:20 a.m., crews repaired a transformer that feeds the police station and 215 other customers and power has been restored

The Lynnhaven area of Va. Beach got hit with two outages Wednesday night - first around 7:30 p.m. and then 9:20 p.m. Harris said crews found problems with an overhead wire sagging at Lynnhaven Parkway and Southern Blvd. The last customers were restored at 1:32 a.m.

Just before 7 a.m. Thursday, a wire went down at Providence and Woodstock, plunging about 1400 customers into the dark and caused traffic lights along Indian River Road to go out. About an hour later, all but 240 customers had electricity restored. Crews hope to have the rest on by noon.

'So far, we have had 15,300 customers affected by outages in the last 24 hours. The peak was last night between 9 and 10 p.m. when 5.800 people were affected, including two outages in the Lynnhaven area,' Harris noted.
