DARE COUNTY, N.C. -- An 800-pound alligator was killed along Highway 64 in Dare County, North Carolina Sunday, officials said.

According to Jay Eddy, Wildlife Officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, crews had to use a backhoe to remove the gator that had been hit by a vehicle just before midnight.

Eddy told 13News Now he believes the alligator has been in the area for at least five years.

'It would hang out for about a month and then head out again until the next year,' Eddy said.

Eddy said the alligator was 12'4' long and weighed at least 800 pounds. It is being stored at the NC Wildlife Resource Commission.
