CAPE HATTERAS -- A Fredericksburg man died Monday when beach sand collapsed on him, officials said.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said the 49-year-old victim was buried in five to six feet of sand.

Family, friends and bystanders tried to dig him from the sand and resuscitate him while waiting for emergency vehicles to arrive, Holda said. Emergency crews said he was unresponsive when they arrived.

The victim had apparently been trying to connect two holes together on the beach near Salvo when the sides gave way and the sand collapsed.

The victim's name has not been released.
