YORK COUNTY -- With a recent spike in home burglaries, York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office deputies are reminding residents about the department's House Check program.

You let authorities know when you're going to be away for a few days by filling out a form online or calling them to say you'd like a house check. After getting the information, a deputy will periodically check on your house during the time you are gone.

To sign up, go to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office Website. Look for the link to the Vacation House Check Program near the bottom of the page and fill out the form.

If you'd rather sign up by phone, call 757-890-3630 during normal business hours and 757-890-3621 after normal business hours. Tell the dispatchers you'd like to sign up for a house check and answer a few questions.

Capt. Troy Lyons says about a half-dozen requests for house checks came in after posting about the program on the sheriff's office Facebook page.

It's not a new program, but because of the recent break-ins across the county, authorities thought it was a good time to remind residents.
