NORFOLK A man convicted of beating and raping a 21-year-old woman is gaining national attention.
Investigators say Mike Jones stuffed the woman into a suitcase and left her for dead.
The story of this shocking crime is to be featured Friday night on the ABCNews program 20/20, aired on WVEC.
It's being called the Case of the Vanishing Blonde.
Inna Budnytska disappeared from a hotel in 2005, but it took several years to solve the mystery.
Surveillance video showed Norfolk native Jones following her into an elevator.
Jones then allegedly took the 21-year-old woman into a Miami hotel room where police say he beat and raped her.
Detectives believed Jones then packed Budnytska's body into a suitcase. He was last seen rolling the baggage away.
Tammy Arline knew Jones while he lived in Norfolk. He graduated from Lake Taylor High School.
She said that he had a bit of a reputation.
'He did like the women. I have never seen him with black women. He liked the Caucasian women; busty,' she said.
Arline worked with Jones at Harbor Park serving concessions for three years.
'You wouldn't think that he would hurt any woman. He was protective of his mom and his sister, very protective,' she said.' He's always had that calm look, even when he was upset with you. He was calm.'
Detectives said he unpacked Budnytska's body and dumped it in the weeds.
She survived and woke up in a hospital bed.
Jones is currently serving life in prison.
