CHESAPEAKE -- Afive-hour standoff at a South Norfolk home has ended peacefully and police have arrested a man they say is responsible.

Police were called about the situation in the 1100 block of Rodgers Street around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.
A man was holding his girlfriend, four children, their father and his wife hostage.

'I'm numb and don't know what to think. I'm trying to find some sort of thought. As a father trying to be protective because I didn't have time to think at all. Just praying,' said one of the hostages, Charles Jefferson.

Just before 8:00 a.m., 28-year-old John McNeal Senior surrendered and was taken into custody. He was arrested and charged with one count of abduction. McNeal may face other charges; however, police say at this time, there is no information to support that the other two adults and four minors were held against their will. They say it appears they realized there was an altercation between McNeal and his ex-girlfriend and they left the house as a group.

Police spokeswoman Officer Sarah Peedin told that the house had been divided into apartments, so other residents were evacuated.

Chesapeake SWAT and negotiators worked to resolve the situation peacefully. By 7:00 a.m., the four children and two adults had been released, leaving only the man and his girlfriend inside.

Acommand center was set up at the library in the 1100 block of Poindexter Street
