HAMPTON - Rumors of a 'hit list' had Hampton Police watching over students and teachers arriving at Kecoughtan High School Wednesday morning.

'It was weird, never been searched going into school. I'm glad they did it, though, to keep us safe but it's sad that we had to have that happen,' said Colton McKinley, a Kecoughtan senior.

Concerned parents called after hearing from their children about a student's post on Facebook Tuesday.

Hampton Schools spokeswoman Ann Stephens-Cherry said officials contacted the police department immediately.

'As of last night, the investigation did not reveal any such hit list. As a precaution and to assure parents, there are 10 officers at the school this morning and four officers will be there throughout the school day,' she said.

Christina Rowley is a Kecoughtan parent. She says she doesn't understand why parents weren't told ahead of time.

'The school should have notified the parents immediately. I should have been given some sort of heads up that something was going on,' she said.

When school lets out for the day, there will be more officers back at the school.
