ELIZABETH CITY--Police have made an arrest in an alleged elder abuse case.

On November 25th, Albemarle Hospital contacted The Department of Social Services in reference to an elderly adult who was admitted to the hospital and showed signs of neglect and abuse.

After evaluating the patient, Clara Hassell, 74, of the 200 block of E. Broad Street, Social Services called police.

Officers investigated and determined that the patient's caretaker, and daughter, Darlene Dora Reid had neglected to provide medical and hygienic care for her.

A warrant was issued for Reid on the charge of Domestic Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Disabled or Elder Adults, which is a felony.

Reid turned herself in on the charge. Reid was given a bond of $10,000 and is currently in jail awaiting a hearing.

Clara Hassell remains in the care of Albemarle Hospital.
