NEWPORT NEWS -- With widespread flu activity being reported, the Peninsula Health District is offering the seasonal influenza vaccine for free at its Newport News location.
'It is still not too late to get your flu vaccine for this year,' said Dr. Teule-Hekima.
Influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months, including pregnant women.
To help prevent the transmission of influenza doctors recommend frequent hand washing, disinfection of common surfaces, covering mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing with tissue or inside of elbow and not the hands, and avoiding contact with others if you are sick.
If you develop an influenza-like illness, especially those who are at high risk of complications, seek medical care promptly to determine if treatment with influenza antiviral medications is warranted.
Antiviral medications can potentially shorten the course of the illness and reduce the incidence of complications.
Injectable flu vaccine is available.
Free injectable flu vaccine is available at the Peninsula Health Center Immunization Clinic located at 416 J Clyde Morris Blvd. in Newport News.
