CHESAPEAKE Students at Deep Creek Central Elementary in Chesapeake were held on the bus as firefighters went through the school to check for the source of a natural gas smell.

The odor in the Shipyard Road school was detected around 7:35 a.m. so it was evacuated as a precaution, officials said.

Firefighters using gas meters swept the school but were unable to detect any signs of gas inside of the building and the students were allowed in just after 8 a.m.

This occurred prior to school starting, so students were held on buses until the Fire Department finished their investigation, said Chesapeake Schools spokeswoman Kellie Goral.
