UPDATE: Police charged 58-year-old David L. Liggins of the 1900 block of Prentis Avenue in Portsmouth with assault.

PORTSMOUTH- A man is charged with assault after he approached a 16-year-old girl on her way to school, Portsmouth Police say.

The 16-year-old was walking on Peach Street just before 7 a.m. Monday when the man, who was behind her, called out to her, Det. Misty Holley told

She ignored him and walked faster, but he matched her pace, she added. When she decided to run, he did too, Det. Holley noted.

'She ran home and her older brother opened the door. The man stopped, turned around and ran the other way,' Det. Holley said.

The girl described the man to police and officers located him a short distance away. He was being questioned by Special Victims Unit Detectives.

'After consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office about this incident, the male is being charged with assault,' Holley stated.

Officers stress that the man, who hasn't been identified, never grabbed or touched the teen.

By definition, assault is someone trying to grab you, swinging at you, but missing, that kind of thing, Holley noted.

Last week, a 15-year-old girl reported being abducted by a man in the area of Lincoln Street and Columbus Avenue. SVU detectives say the two incidents are not connected.

Anyone with information in reference to that incident should call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
