NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News man has been charged after a 13-year-old boy was found by police at a hotel with drug paraphernalia in plain view.

Police charged 33-year-old Michael Vanhook with drug possession with intent to manufacture/sell, child neglect and possession of a stolen firearm and possession of firearm by felon.

According to police, around midnight last Thursday they stopped a vehicle on Warwick Blvd. and discovered a stolen firearm.

The driver, 28-year-old Brandon Robinson was summoned for driving while revoked and charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

A K-9 narcotics dog made a positive hit on a large sum of cash which was hidden on Vanhook, who was a passenger in the vehicle, police said.

That investigation led officers to a local motel room rented by Vanhook. Police said a 13-year-old, who is related to Vahnook, was inside the room and drug paraphernalia was in plain view.

Police seized crack cocaine and materials for processing and packaging narcotics.

CPS was notified and the boy was released to relatives who came to the scene.
