NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say alcohol may have been a factor in a wreck involving an SUVdriver and a bicyclist Saturday night.

The person who may have been intoxicated was the bicyclist.

Dispatchers received a call about the incident at Jefferson Avenue and Brooke Street at 7:54 p.m.

A 48-year-old from Newport News was riding on the sidewalk along Jefferson Avenue, when she came down off the sidewalk and fell onto Brooke Street.

The driver of the SUV, a woman from York County, was on Brooke Street and turned right to head up Jefferson Avenue. Police said the driver did not see the bicyclist in the roadway.

Officers originally thought the injuries of the person on the bike were life-threatening, but later changed that assessment.

Police are not sure if any charges will be filed.
