SUFFOLK -- Police charged a Suffolk mother with abuse and neglect Thursday- two months after an elementary school nurse alerted police.

Christine Travita Williams-Porter was charged with abuse and neglect of children and cruelty and injuries to children.

According to police spokeswoman Diana Klink, a nurse at Mack Benn Elementary called authorities on February 12 after a student complained of pain and of being given medication not prescribed to him. Police and EMS responded to the school.

The student was initially transported to Sentara Obici Hospital for treatment and then transferred to the Children's Hospital of The Kings Daughters, Klink said.

According to Klink, the child had been physically assaulted by his mother.
