KENTWOOD, Mich. A 9-year-old boy has died after being stabbed repeatedly by another child at a playground at a mobile home park in western Michigan, police said Tuesday.
Police in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids, said in a statement that Michael Conner Verkerke ran home and collapsed on the porch around 6 p.m. Monday after he was stabbed. An ambulance was called, the department said, and he died after being taken to a hospital.
Police say that four children were playing when one of the kids pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Verkerke. Verkerke was able to run back to his porch. EMS took him to the hospital where he died.
A 12-year-old boy left the playground and went to a nearby residence and asked to use the phone. He called police and turned himself in for the incident. Police took the boy to the hospital for evaluation and he is now lodged at the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the incident.
Witness Glenn Stacey said he was approached by the 12-year-old afterward and the boy asked to use his phone.
'I was getting my ladder,' Stacey said, 'and this young man came and asked me if he could use my phone. I gave him my phone, and I heard him tell the 911 operator, 'I just stabbed someone. Come and get me. I want to die.' It was just a sad situation.'
