Driver charged with DUI after fatal September crash in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is facing several charges after a fatal crash on I-64 that happened last month. 

Sgt. Michelle Anaya, the spokesperson with Virginia State Police, says on September 17, 23-year-old Daniel Ryan Crawford was attempting to exit I-64 at Oyster Point Road when he ran off the road and struck a tree

Flames began to consume the car, which killed the passenger, 20-year-old Nelson Conner Gays.

Crawford surrendered to authorities on October 11. Crawford is charged with aggravated DUI manslaughter, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving while suspended.
