Driver killed while traveling in wrong direction on I-64 in James City Co.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- State police say one person died after a car heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-64 hit a Hino Truck head-on in James City County.

The incident began when, around 2:40 a.m., a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro went onto I-64 in New Kent County heading eastbound in the westbound lanes. The driver continued in the wrong direction until mile marker 229 where the vehicle sideswiped a 2016 Ford Fusion, driven by Francis Beauge Jr., according to state police.

The collision with the Ford Fusion caused the Camaro to ricochet across the lane and hit a 2016 Hino Truck, driven by James Newsome, head-on. The car then ran off the roadway and hit several trees, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

The driver of the Camaro was unable to get out of the car and died at the scene, authorities say. The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured. Each vehicle was occupied only by the drivers.

At this time, it is unclear how the driver of the Camaro entered the interstate in the wrong direction. It is also unknown if alcohol was a factor in the incident.
